BREAKING CHAINS. BUILDING FENCES. FOR THE LOVE OF DOGS.

ChainFreeAbingdon@comcast.net

A great big thanks to Dr. Victoria Bettis and her whole wonderful staff for their support of ChainFree Abingdon/Washington County!

The dental clinic donated an iPod Shuffle player to the person who left the most dog food at their office before Christmas, to be donated to ChainFree Abingdon to share with hungry dogs.

What a generous way to celebrate the holidays!

See the Our Helpful Friends page to thank her.

GETTING READY FOR NEXT SEASON . .

ChainFree Abindon completed last season in November. So far we have built 15 fences, freeing 23 dogs!

We will start building fences again in March or April, and are already working on our plans.

There are 8 families already on our waiting list eagerly awaiting their fences.

If you or someone you know is interested in a fence, please contact ChainFree at 276-698-3397 or ChainFreeAbingdon@comcast.net

And remember that donations and volunteers are always welcome and appreciated!

Your dog needs special attention in the winter, so see our Winter Tips below:

  • Dogs need some protection in the dog house, to burrow in against the cold temperatures. Check your dog’s bedding at least once a week to make sure it is dry and sufficient for him to curl up.

  • Dogs also need more food in the winter, because they burn more calories in trying to stay warm.

  • Please check waterbowls twice a day to make sure the water is not frozen. Dogs need lots of water during the winter time.

If you or anyone you know is in need of straw or food for a dog, please contact Chain Free at 276 698-3397 or ChainFreeAbingdon@comcast.net.

OUR PURPOSE . .

IS TO ELIMINATE 24-HOUR CHAINING OF DOGS BY PROVIDING FREE FENCED-IN PET ENCLOSURES FOR DOGOWNERS WHO CAN NOT MANAGE TO DO A FENCE.

Our primary goal is to prevent the continuous chaining of dogs in the Town of Abingdon and the rest of Washington County, Virginia. We work hard to build fences for families who cannot afford to build a fenced-in enclosure.  We have freed 23 dogs so far with 15 fences, and we are planning fences for eight others! In addition we offer referrals to low-cost spay/neuter services if necessary. Need to contact us? Just send an email to ChainFreeAbingdon@comcast.net

Thanks for visiting our site! We hope you find it helpful.  You have come to the right place if you want to help a chained dog, need to know the law, want to help us by donating a dog house, fencing supplies or volunteering in some way, or need to know how to build a fence.

We are building new fences all the time. Check the "News and Events" page to see what else is on the horizon.

Take a look at "Recent Fences" - we've added photo and will be adding more.

Take a look at our "How You Can Help" page to find out how you can assist these wonderful animals.

Go to "Facts about Chaining" to learn from the experts why 24/7 chaining is both cruel and dangerous.

"How to get a free fence" talks about referring your dog or someone else's dog for our help, and there are some helpful tips on the "Print these Tips" page.

"Our Helping Friends" showcases some of our sponsors, and the "Resources" page will show you some options you may be able to use.

Imagine being chained to a tree year after year.

You watch the door, hoping someone will come and play.

No one ever does.

You long to run, but you can only pace.

You shiver in winter and pant in the summer.

Eventually you stop barking for help.

You have given up all hope.
